Convert PNG to WebP

Make PNG images lighter for websites without losing transparency. WebP supports transparent areas, and the conversion happens entirely in your browser.

80%

80% gives small files with good quality. At 100% current versions of Chrome, Edge and Firefox create a lossless WebP, which is larger.

Transparent areas are kept, because WebP supports transparency.

Guide and details

How it works
  1. Choose a PNG file or drag it onto the field above.
  2. The WebP is created right away with 80% quality. Transparent areas stay transparent.
  3. Check the preview: the checkered pattern shows where the image is transparent.
  4. Optional: for logos, icons and screenshots with text, open the advanced settings and choose 100% quality.
  5. Select “Download WebP” to save the image.
Transparency stays intact

Unlike JPG, WebP can store transparency. Transparent and semi-transparent pixels of the PNG are carried over, so logos and cut-out images keep their shape on any background.

Lossy or lossless

With the default of 80%, WebP uses lossy compression. It works well for photos and images with soft colour transitions and usually makes them much smaller than PNG.

Graphics with sharp edges, text or few colours can look slightly blurred after lossy compression. For these, choose 100%: current versions of Chrome, Edge and Firefox then create a lossless WebP that keeps every pixel. A lossless WebP is often smaller than the PNG, but not always, so compare the sizes shown after the conversion.

Animations, metadata and browser support

If the PNG is animated (APNG), only the first frame is converted, because this tool creates still images. Text comments and other metadata in the PNG are not copied.

Creating WebP depends on your browser. If yours cannot create WebP files, the converter says so before you start and never saves a different format by mistake.

Frequently asked questions

Does WebP keep the transparent background of my PNG?

Yes. WebP supports transparency, and transparent areas are preserved with lossy as well as with lossless compression.

Will the WebP always be smaller than the PNG?

Usually, but not always. Very simple graphics can already be tiny as PNG. The converter shows both file sizes, so you can keep whichever file is smaller.

Which quality should I choose for a logo?

Choose 100%. In Chrome, Edge and Firefox this creates a lossless WebP, so edges and text stay sharp.

How large can my PNG be?

Files up to 50 MB and images up to 50 megapixels can be converted, or 16.8 megapixels on smartphones and devices with little memory.
