Guide and details

How it works
  1. Choose an AVIF file or drop it onto the area above.
  2. Your browser decodes the image and creates the PNG, usually in under a second.
  3. Check the preview and choose “Download PNG”.
How the conversion works

AVIF is a modern image format that often stores photos much smaller than JPG. Many older programs, website builders and print services cannot open it yet. This tool decodes the file with your browser’s image functions and writes a PNG. Whether your browser can read AVIF is tested by the page itself with a real sample file instead of guessing from the browser name. If it cannot, you see a notice.

The file is first checked as an AVIF container: file signature, size fields and the location of the image data. The finished PNG is read again and compared with the expected dimensions before the download is offered.

Colours, transparency and limits

PNG is lossless and stores transparency. An alpha channel in the AVIF is kept. The PNG holds 8 bits per colour channel and can be much larger than the AVIF.

If the AVIF stores more than 8 bits, is marked as HDR or uses its own colour profile, the tool shows a note. Faithful HDR output is not promised: your browser converts the colours, and the result contains no colour profile.

Animated AVIF files are detected. Only the first frame is converted, and the tool says so. Per image up to 50 MB and 50 megapixels are possible, on smartphones and devices with little memory 16.8 megapixels.

Frequently asked questions

Which browsers can convert AVIF files?

Any browser that can decode AVIF itself, usually current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. The page tests this on load with a sample file. If your browser cannot read AVIF, a notice appears and the conversion does not start.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Your browser reads and converts the file locally on your device. The image is sent neither to AnyConvertor nor to third parties.

What happens to animated AVIF files?

They are detected as animated. The result is a single PNG with the first frame and no animation. A note states this explicitly.

Does an HDR image stay HDR?

No. The PNG stores no extended brightness range here. The tool shows a note, and brightness and colours can differ from the original.

Is the conversion free?

Yes, with no registration and no watermark.
