Extract a ZIP file

Look at the contents of a ZIP file and download single files or a selection. The archive is read in your browser and not uploaded.

Guide and details

How it works
  1. Choose a ZIP file or drop it onto the area above.
  2. The page reads only the table of contents and shows folders, file names and sizes. Nothing is unpacked yet.
  3. Download a single file, or tick files and folders for a new ZIP.
  4. Check the notes about skipped or renamed entries.
Archives are not trusted

ZIP files from the internet can be manipulated, so the tool treats every archive as untrusted. Paths with “../”, absolute paths, drive letters, backslashes, hidden control characters and reserved Windows names are cleaned or refused, so nothing can end up outside the download name. Links (symlinks) and special files are never extracted, and nothing is executed.

Against so called ZIP bombs the tool counts the bytes that are really produced while unpacking and does not trust the sizes in the directory. Archives that deliver more data than they claim, overlapping entries or too much data are stopped. Files with an unusually high compression ratio are flagged.

Checking and selecting

Every file is checked for size and CRC-32 checksum while it is extracted. The checksum finds damage; it is not a security feature. You download single files directly. For several files the tool builds a new ZIP from your selection instead of triggering many downloads at once.

Duplicate or unsafe names are changed and marked “renamed”. The names shown are the ones used for the download.

Limits

Archives up to 200 MB, up to 10,000 entries and 600 MB of unpacked data together are handled, less on smartphones and devices with little memory. Password protected ZIP files, ZIP64 and rare compression methods are not supported; the affected entries are shown with a reason. Other archive formats such as RAR or 7z are not opened.

Frequently asked questions

Is my archive uploaded?

No. The ZIP file is only read in your browser.

Can I open password protected ZIP files?

No. Such archives are recognised and refused with an understandable message.

What happens to dangerous file paths?

They are cleaned or refused. A path like “../../file” can never end up outside the download name. The entry is shown as renamed or blocked.

Can I download several files at once?

Yes, as a new ZIP with your selection. Several single downloads at the same time are deliberately not triggered.

Are programs inside the ZIP file executed?

No. The tool only reads bytes. Files are neither opened nor run. Still be careful when you open downloaded files later.
