Convert JPG to PNG

Save JPG photos as lossless PNG files, ready for editing or for websites that require PNG. Your browser does the work, so the photos never leave your device.

Guide and details

How it works
  1. Choose a JPG or JPEG file, or drag it onto the field above.
  2. The PNG is created immediately. There are no settings to adjust, because PNG stores every pixel without further loss.
  3. Check the preview: photos taken sideways on a phone are turned upright automatically.
  4. Select “Download PNG” to save the file.
What changes when a JPG becomes a PNG

PNG compresses losslessly: the PNG contains exactly the pixels of the decoded JPG. Converting therefore does not improve quality. Compression artefacts that are already in the JPG stay visible, but no new ones are added, even if you edit and save the PNG many times.

Because nothing is thrown away, the PNG is usually several times larger than the JPG. For photos you only want to share or upload, the JPG is often the better choice. PNG pays off when you want to keep editing an image or when a service only accepts PNG.

Transparency and backgrounds

A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG is fully opaque as well. The background stays exactly as it is in the photo. Removing a background is a separate task that this converter does not perform.

Orientation, metadata and privacy

Phones often store photos sideways and record the correct rotation as EXIF metadata. The converter applies this rotation, so the PNG appears upright in every program.

Other EXIF data, such as camera model, date and GPS location, is not copied into the PNG. This is useful if you want to share an image without revealing where it was taken. Embedded colour profiles are not included either: images are saved in the standard sRGB colour space, which can make photos with a wide colour gamut look slightly less saturated.

The conversion runs entirely in your browser. Your photos are not uploaded to AnyConvertor or to any other server.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?

No. The PNG keeps the quality of the JPG exactly, including any existing compression artefacts. It only prevents further losses when you edit and save the image again.

Why is the PNG file so much larger?

PNG stores every pixel losslessly, while JPG discards fine detail to save space. For photos this makes the PNG several times larger.

Will my photo be rotated correctly?

Yes. The rotation stored by your camera or phone is applied, so the PNG appears the right way up.

Is my location data kept?

No. EXIF metadata such as GPS location, camera model and date is not copied into the PNG.

How large can my JPG be?

Files up to 50 MB and images up to 50 megapixels can be converted, or 16.8 megapixels on smartphones and devices with little memory.
