Guide and details
How it works
- Choose a JPG or JPEG file, or drag it onto the field above.
- Your browser creates a WebP with 80% quality right away.
- Compare the file sizes shown next to the preview. For a smaller file or more detail, open the advanced settings and change the quality.
- Select “Download WebP” to save the image.
Why WebP for photos
WebP was developed for the web. At comparable visual quality, WebP photos are usually smaller than JPGs, so pages load faster and use less data. All current major browsers display WebP.
Some older programs, email clients and print services still expect JPG. Keep the JPG if you need it for such cases.
Choosing the quality
A JPG is already compressed with losses, and WebP compresses it again. Each lossy step can remove a little more detail, so start from the best JPG you have. The default of 80% keeps photos looking natural while reducing the file size noticeably.
Lower values save more space but can make fine textures look smeared. At 100%, current versions of Chrome, Edge and Firefox create a lossless WebP. It reproduces the decoded JPG pixel for pixel, but it is often larger than the JPG itself.
Orientation, metadata and browser support
The rotation stored by your camera is applied, so the WebP is upright. EXIF data such as GPS location and camera model is not copied, and the image is saved in the sRGB colour space.
Creating WebP files depends on your browser. If yours cannot create WebP, the converter tells you before you start instead of saving a different format.
Frequently asked questions
Is WebP smaller than JPG?
Usually yes, at similar visual quality. How much smaller depends on the image and the chosen quality. The converter shows both file sizes, so you can check the result directly.
Can every browser open WebP files?
All current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display WebP. Some older software and email programs may not.
Why does the tool say my browser cannot create WebP?
Displaying WebP and creating WebP are different abilities. Some browsers can show WebP images but cannot encode them. In that case, use a current version of Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The image is converted locally in your browser and is never sent to a server.
